In today's lesson we have been preparing to answer the question
Antony Horowitz describes Raven's Gate as a supernatural thriller.
To what extent do you agree with this description of the novel?
Next week you will be writing a minimum of three P.E.E paragraphs (one each for character, place/setting and plot).
We found evidence from different parts of the novel and made notes explaining them on the table we filled out in the lesson.
Your task is to comment on this post combining a row of your table to make a full P.E.E paragraph. (Point, Evidence and Explanation).
Make sure you include:
-quotes from the text.
-all three parts of the P.E.E structure.
-can you refer to the effect on the reader?
-Word and sentence level analysis.
Any problems, come and find me on Friday.
Good luck
Mr Brown
Here is one of the examples we wrote together in the lesson. (Place/Setting)
ReplyDeleteThe settings in Raven’s Gate link to the Supernatural Thriller genre. In the chemist in Lesser Malling Horowitz uses the description “He found a flask filled with yellow liquid and turned it round then almost cried out as a severed eye floated to the surface”. The word “severed” makes the reader feel like the eye has been stolen or taken from its owner. The way it moves towards Matt makes us think it is alive and following him.
Mr Brown
Hi Mr Brown,
DeleteShall/can I dp the chemist instead next lesson or on the day as I don't think that the pond is the best example to use! I got it off the board but I think it'll be easier with the chemist

ReplyDeleteTom Burgess shooting Asmodeus links to the supernatural thriller genre because Anthony Horowitz writes: "He pulled the trigger, there was an explosion. The cat had no chance. Tom burgess had emptied both of his barrels and lead pellets tor into its fur, spinning it into horrible somersaults over the grass." The fact that Tom Burgess shot the cat suggests that Asmodeus might be some sort of threat to Tom Burgess or Matt.
Also the word "Tore" connotes that the bullets viscously killed the cat, painfully too maybe.

P: place or setting:pond with the fish and ducks(this was one I chose from the board)
ReplyDeleteE:'The boy by the pond pulled out a bb gun and smiling, he took aim at the ducks. '
'The girls said:' " we feed the ducks and then Freddy kills -it's a game chorused the girls!
E:'This is really cruel and evil for anyone to do and especially young children. Young children never own guns-but this chikd does and he thinks it's fun!
so it's evil( super natural thriller)
a characater in a novel is usually means a person
ReplyDeletethe place was a mess. a huge carving knife had been thrusted into the cupard draw.
the word "thrust" means forcibly. so the person forcbly threw the knife likie they wanted to hit it at someone

p:place or setting: lesser malling
ReplyDeletee: no cars passed nothing moved an empty cobbeld area
e: its a weird place where children play a game where you kill ducks

P:Noah links to a supernatural thriller.
ReplyDeleteE: He held out his hand. The fingers were fat and stubby, the nails incrusted with mud.
E:He probably doesn't wash his hands much and he might dig graves for people who have died.

P:place or setting: The Chemist
ReplyDeleteE:I walked into the chemist I turned around and I saw an eyeball floating around in a jar.
E:Its really freaky seeing an eyeball in a jar
last ones by Jade
ReplyDeleteP:It was set in the bedroom where Matt was staying in with Mrs Deverill.
ReplyDeleteE:Asmodeus sinks his teeth into his flesh. Bright red blood welled out of a jagged bite in his thumb.
E:Asmodeus is a black cat and black cats are usually associated with witches.

My link to the supernatural genre is Tom Burgess's death.
ReplyDelete'He was obviously dead. He had hideous red gashes in his skin, his eyes where bulging and his fair hair was matted with blood.'
Common murders are usually subtle so the attacker can't be identified, but this one was clear that there had been a death, therefore it is described as 'obvious.' He had 'hideous red gashes in his skin' which means that his skin had been torn and slashed viciously and not by poison. It must have been a messy murder because his 'fair hair was matted with blood' which implies that he whoever or whatever had killed him had not cared if it was dirty.

P: Matthew is accused for committing crime and is sent to lesser malling with mrs Deverill.
ReplyDeleteE: No cars ever come past this area.
E: Lesser Malling is a weird place srange things seem to happen there. 'the roads seemed to be playing tricks on Matt'
P:Character(Asmodeus)
ReplyDeleteE:When Asmodeus was shot by Tom Burgess, He reappears later alive. Also, Tom burgess dies with gashes all over his body (possibly from the cat).
E:Asmodeus is not a normal cat, although cats have nine lives, they are minor accidents and being shot is not a minor accident. The cat seems to hold grudges as he seemed to have killed Tom Burgess.

P: Another way Raven's Gate links to the supernatural thriller genre are some of the settings used in the chemist.
ReplyDeleteE: The shop was like nothing Matt had ever seen before: "a dark, evil smelling place with rows of wooden shelves. There were some boxes of headache pills and a few packets of soap, but mostly the shelves were stacked with old bottles."
E: The chemist was "a dark evil smelling place," it suggests that evil people live there and it isn't safe. The word "evil" connotes the chemist is a wicked place. The word "dark" suggests that the chemist is not a pleasant place to be in.

P : a way Raven's Gate is the shooting of Asmodeus.
ReplyDeleteE : Anthony Horowitz writes : 'He pulled the trigger, there was an explosion. The cat had no chance. Tom Burgess had emptied both of his barrels and lead pellets tore into it, it's fur spinning into somersaults over the grass.' Also, later on in the story - the next day - Asmodeus is sitting alive and well staring Matt out - not a scratch on his body or blood on his fur.
E : This suggests that cats really do have 9 lives. Also, the way he looks at Matt says 'I've sussed you, I know what you're trying to do and you tried to kill me - but here I am.' In real life, cats don't really have 9 lives so this is supernatural, the fact that he's alive after he's been blown up too

P:Character:Asmodeus.
ReplyDeleteE:Asmodeus was killed by Tom Burgess.Later he is alive. Also. Tom burgess was killed with gashes all over his body.

P: Miss Creevy was described as not a particularly normal person in the book which could be a reason that she is part of the supernatural thriller genre.
ReplyDeleteEv: In the book it says that Miss Creevy had a pram but with no baby just a china doll.
Ex: It's not really that normal to be holding a pram with a china doll at her age and, the strange things that are happening so far sound not particularly normal which could lead us to why Miss Creevy is in the supernatural thriller genre.
p: Miss Deverill is not normal, as described in the book, she also did unusual thing such the snake, the cat.
ReplyDeleteEv: she was holding a snake were did it come from?
Ex:Its not normal to be holding a snake over an ill boy and then driping the blood over his body!
